Poem: Once Upon a Beep

Once upon a beep,
From the stone we pulled an ore.
When it melted down,
I cast it into little forms.

The Tuff was weeping while
Lanterns flickered at dead’s end,
And little copper men
Clamored songs and flashed a grin.

Hello sky. Hello bee.
Hello Blue so big that
I forget to breathe in Joy
as pretty things wave at me.
Little bronze boys wander
Out of the caves
More family than friends
Their eyes now ablaze
And what to our wondering
Eyes should appear
But a dandy young poppy
And copper for years.

Feet, meet grass.
Hands, meet breeze.
The red stone and blaze rods
Now sort through the trees.

“What am I?” Sing the bronze ones
“What are we to this world?
Do you see the field
where all colors swirl?
Who gave us these chests
with pretty copper pearls?”

Hello sky. Hello bee.
Hello Blue so big that
I forget to breathe in Joy
as pretty things wave at me.
Little bronze boys wander
Out of the caves
More family than friends
Their eyes now ablaze
And what to our wondering
Eyes should appear
But a dandy young poppy
And copper for years.

We are the collectors,
As everyone sees,
And each little golem
takes things from me.

The copper chorus of dents and dings
Along a cherry breeze swirls and sings.
Each little hand holds some kind of treat
To think they were made from ores of the deep.

They look up. They see sun.
Our engineer feat has already been won.
They chase after the leaf litter stars.
They bask in the sunflower flames.
‘Til the rain, water and rust play silence again
Daily they ask us,

“Am I real?”
“Are you my friend?”
“What are we to this world?”
“Who gave us these chests
with pretty copper pearls?”

Hello sky. Hello bee.
Hello Blue so big that
I forget to breathe in Joy
as pretty things wave at me.
Little bronze boys wander
Out of the caves
More family than friends
Their eyes now ablaze
And what to our wondering
Eyes should appear
But a dandy young poppy
And copper for years.

“Yes, you’re all real.” The Overworld sings
As each golem smiles, “You found me!”
